Session Description:

This session explores pre-, during, and post-reading activities and projects that inspire students to communicate, collaborate, and create across all three modes of communication. Come learn practical strategies for integrating design-based pedagogies, 21st century skills, and various web 2.0 tools in ways that support students in becoming critical readers and effective interpreters of culturally authentic texts. A brief summary of findings from the qualitative study on which these strategies are based will also be provided.

In order to achieve high levels of proficiency, students do more than just expand their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. This presentation:
1) highlights the critical role that 21st century skills play in proficiency development,
2) outlines key ways in which design-based pedagogies can support proficiency development, and
3) offers a wide range of pre-, during, and post-reading activities and projects that actively engage students in using web 2.0 tools to critically analyze literature and to explore the culture embedded within it.

The presentation concludes with several ideas for scaffolding student engagement with culturally authentic texts and a brief summary of findings from the qualitative study on which these strategies are based. Links to activity ideas, scaffolding and project templates, web 2.0 tools, and sources for culturally authentic texts will also be provided.
